Each year, McCormick Home holds the “Art and Soul” show, displaying the impressive work created by residents in the Home’s art therapy program. For participants, the experience not only engages various motor and cognitive skills, but also enhances their sense of creativity, self-worth, confidence and purpose.
In the spring, significant renovations took place at McCormick Home’s east garden. Thanks to the generous support of the Westminster College Foundation and the McCormick Care Foundation, our outdoor area now includes glider benches, extra-large houses for birds and butterflies, raised garden beds and a white picket fence to display bird houses painted by our residents.
“I have been advocating for this!” exclaims Wendie Bullen of the recent pilot expansion of the overnight respite program to seven days a week. Wendie, a family member at McCormick Dementia Services, has been bringing her mother-in-law Joan for overnight respite program stays on a regular basis for the last four years and is an enthusiastic advocate of the program.
To celebrate the successes in realizing our corporate values, the McCormick Care Group Employee Values Award was established by the organization’s Quality of Work Life Action Team to recognize employees who exemplify true compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and collaboration in their day-to-day work.
Results are in for the second phase of the research study of the effects of animal-assisted therapy on managing responsive behaviours in people with dementia. While the first study involved a look at long-term care residents at McCormick Home, this phase centered on the Home’s staff and their interactions with study participants, family members and observers.
