McCormick Dementia Services Announces Discontinuation of McCormick Caregiver Education Series
November 1, 2017 – After an extensive review of our community services structure and in consultation with members of our staff, the community and the South West Local Health Integration Network, McCormick Dementia Services has decided to discontinue the McCormick Caregiver Education Series and refer those in need to the First Link program offered by the Alzheimer Society.
In keeping with the patient-centred philosophy supported by the South West LHIN’s Patients First initiative and in recognition of the important front-line support offered by the society’s First Link education program, we now have an opportunity to address gaps in our community services by focusing more on offering enhanced caregiver education programs as well as support services related to assisting those who are living with lesser-known forms of dementia, including Lewy Body and Frontotemporal dementia.
We are pleased to be working with the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex to help ensure that the needs of those living with dementia are met across the continuum of care.
“We believe that the streamlining of our dementia care support services will enable those in need to access the right care at the right time,” says Carol Walters, CEO of the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex. “We recognize the importance of our continued work with McCormick Dementia Services and the enhanced community support that we are able to offer together.”
“We value this opportunity to support the recommendations of the 2017 Ontario Dementia Strategy, which names the First Link program as the starting point for dementia care, and are looking forward to the opportunities presented to us to meet the enhanced needs of caregivers at later stages along the dementia journey,” says Steve Crawford, CEO of McCormick Care Group, the governing organization of McCormick Dementia Services.
We would like to thank our staff members, particularly our dementia services social workers and our expert colleagues in dementia care throughout the community, for their hard work and dedication to our education series since its beginning.
